Writer Mom Recommends: Hillsong Kids!

I can’t tell you how excited I am about today’s recommendation. I seriously want to shout at the top of my lungs, “Go buy these DVDs!” But I’ll make my case and let you decide. :)

I could start by talking about the fact that I no longer let my kids watch Nickelodeon because of inappropriate ads (during Dora, no less…I’m sorry, but my 4-year-old doesn’t need to know about sexting yet). Or I could talk about the fact that I’ve felt a lot of conviction about the time we spend in front of the TV. Not just how much time, but wanting to make that time count.

So I was excited to discover that Hillsong (a gigantic church in Australia that produces a lot of popular worship songs) has a series of DVDs for kids!

Let me tell you, my kids are addicted to them. I mean, ADDICTED. They have videos for school-aged kids (my son showed interest in them around 4 years old), and they’ve just started branching into the realm of toddlers too.

The school-aged videos have live concert segments with motions to the songs (It feels like Christian Disney channel), and each video lays out the plan of salvation and includes the sinner’s prayer. Not to mention your kids will become addicted to Funny Man Dan. Seriously. I’ve warned you.

Here are the videos we have, but you can find others on Amazon:

The Kids Jr. video for toddlers is awesome as well. It captivates my daughter’s attention, and she quotes “Let your light shine” right along with the video. I love that it’s teaching her God’s Word and it feels current and relevant. (The style of the music is reminiscent of the Nick Jr. show Yo Gabba Gabba, but waaaaay less annoying!)

So there you have it. My kids seriously beg for these videos every day. I love that they learn God’s Word and are entertained at the same time, not to mention the worship is awesome and has moved me to tears at times. No kidding. (Oh, and a fun little bonus…my son has an obsession with Australian accents now, which is totally cute. :) )

What videos have you discovered for kids lately? How do you maximize time spent in front of the TV?

*After preparing this post, I’ve learned that my grandfather passed away. He’s faced a fierce battle with Parkinsons, so while I’m sad to say good-bye, I’m celebrating the fact that he’s now walking on healthy legs in heaven. Since I’m spending the day with family, I apologize that I won’t be able to respond to comments like normal. I hope you have a blessed weekend!

Month-End Report: Recycling and Flatirons and Washers, Oh My!

My month in 200 words or less…

TV choice: Chuggington for the little man. American Idol for me. (Any winner predictions?)
Book choice: Just Between You and Me by Jenny B. Jones. Funny and poignant…my favorite combo.
Favorite blog: A Joyful Chaos - Former Amish family sharing their story. Simple yet beautiful.
Writing pal shoutout: Wendy Miller - Walking the crazy journey with me.
Favorite new buys: High Efficiency washer (our old washer croaked). Chi flatiron (best invention ever!). Curbside recycling service. (Not sure what took me so long.)
Biggest Challenges: Getting my son to stay in bed. Can anyone say sleep deprivation? And Baby Daughter is now crawling and pulling up on everything, which means Tired Mama is on the move, too.
Celebrations: My grandmother-in-law’s 90th birthday…a life of faith and service. Officially conquering potty training (knock on wood). :)
Favorite quote: If you’ve never failed, you haven’t tested the boundaries of your capabilities. ~ Jeff Foxworthy

What happened in your month? Copy this list and tell me all about it! :)

Month-End Report: I’m a Little Rusty. Forgive My Creaks.

I feel a bit like that beat-up truck your neighbor keeps in his driveway. You know the one…It’s been sitting there for months and then one day, he decides it’s time to take old Sally out for a ride again. So he puts the key in the ignition and the poor truck sputters and chokes before it finally turns over. Then he backs ‘er out to much wailing and gnashing of gears, only to have the back bumper fall off in the street.

Hopefully my bumper won’t fall off in the blogosphere, but I’d like to think I have good reasons for my rustiness. My house has gone from normalcy to chaos and back to normalcy again with the wave that was my sister’s heart transplant. She’s officially moved back home after a 2-week stay at the hospital and then a 4-week stay at my house. It’s hard to put into words the range of emotions I’ve felt (although my husband could probably define them for you in one word – crazy!). :)

I’ll spare you all the details but will just say this…The Lord is good. Whether we’re in a high or low point in life, He knows exactly what we need in each moment and provides it. Makes it kind of hard to despise the Guy, ya know?

So without further ado, here’s my month (or two months) in 200 words or less. And no, the paragraphs before this one do NOT count. :)

TV Choice: Jake and the Neverland Pirates for my son. Amazing Race for me.
Book Choice: Rhyming Dust Bunnies for my son. The Rhythm of Secrets by Patti Lacy for me.
Favorite Blog: Keli Gwyn. I know I referenced her in my last month-end report, but she had some posts on discouragement that spoke straight to me.
Writing Pal Shoutout: Melanie Brasher . . . Jumping back into the blogosphere alongside me. Her posts are beautiful and inspiring.
Favorite Eats: Anything made by my mom. She treated us to all sorts of family favorites when she was here…Dutch apple pie, beef and noodles, peanut butter squares…you know, low-calorie stuff. :)
Biggest Fear(s): That my creativity and drive for my writing won’t return. That I’ll lose balance in my life when I jump back into blogging.
Biggest Celebration(s): My sister’s new heart, of course! :) And to make it even sweeter, our friend Annabelle got a new heart a couple weeks ago! Praising God for these second chances.
Favorite Verse: ‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.’ Prov. 3:5,6

So how about you? Any rust on your bumper? :) If you’re up to it, copy my list into the comments and tell me about your month!
