My Post-Holiday Cleanse Diet: Success? Or Epic Fail?

I don’t know about you, but I spent the holidays eating wa-a-a-y too much junk food. So I decided to schedule a post-holiday cleanse for myself a few weeks ago. (Results and takeaways are coming, so hang on. :) )

There are lots of cleanses out there–everything from juice diets to cleanses that include supplements. Last summer I did a ten-day cleanse through Advocare. It was crazy-hard, but I couldn’t believe how much my energy and overall health improved as a result!

This time around, I decided to create my own cleanse diet–mostly to save money but also just to see how the results would differ from the formal cleanse program I did before. Some cleanses are pretty strict and don’t allow protein in the diet, but I included some “clean” proteins so I wouldn’t starve. :)

The basics of my diet were to eat mostly whole foods–fruits, vegetables, a few lean proteins (fish, chicken, etc.), unsalted nuts and seeds, and grains limited to whole oats and brown rice. I also used olive oil a LOT and mixed it with balsamic vinegar for salads. Oh, and no dairy. That’s a must on a cleanse diet.

So what were my end results? Well, semi-success and semi-failure. I originally set out to do the diet for 10 days, but I only lasted 5. I think mostly because I didn’t have accountability this time. (If I do another cleanse, I’ll shell out the dough and do Advocare again…There’s something about spending money that makes me stick to it.)

The other factor that made the diet difficult was my overall health. I was dealing with sinus issues and ended up on three different medications during the diet, which whacked out my body big-time.

In the end, though, it wasn’t a total failure. I did lose 3 pounds in 5 days. (Technically I lost 6 pounds, but 3 of them were due to extra weight from my medication. I wasn’t going to count it, but my hubby says to take the credit. :) ) And, I’ve managed to keep those pounds off by getting back into a normal diet and just being careful to not overdo the calories.

So would I do a cleanse again? I’d say maybe. If my body feels as sluggish as it did after the holidays, I probably will. I just might seek out a more accountable system next time.

In the coming weeks, I’ll share some meals and snacks I ate during the cleanse that are also great to eat any other time of the year!

Have you ever tried a cleanse or detox diet? What do you think would help you succeed? What scares you most about them?

Top 5 Ways to Sneak in Exercise During the Holidays

I know, I know. Today’s not my normal Top 5 day, but I couldn’t resist. The sugar cookies are calling, y’know? :)

So we all know the obvious exercise options to counterbalance holiday treats…join a gym, etc….but I thought I’d share some nonconventional ways to sneak in exercise this month (along with a serious recommendation for each)…

5. Cardio kickboxing at the toy store: Another mom is racing toward the last Pillow Pet? Uppercut and jab. Another dad is buying the last Thomas the Train set? Hook and roundhouse kick.

Seriously, though: Don’t be afraid to get out and go to a fitness class. It’ll relieve the stress of the holidays and you might just meet other people who want to get ahead at the toy store, too (Never hurts to know your competition :) ).

4. Bicep curls: Stand with feet hip-width apart, elbows pressed into sides, hands gripping Chex Mix. Slowly lift to the mouth and lower back down to the party mix bowl. Repeat for 10 reps.

Seriously, though: It’s okay to eat your favorite holiday foods, but everything in moderation. Taking a break to enjoy each bite can force you to slow down and realize when your stomach has had enough.

3. Power Walk: When the only parking spot is at the back of the lot, tug that sherpa tight and pump those arms. Who cares if you look like a stuffed marshmallow on Red Bull?

Seriously, though: Even if the only spot is close to the store, why not park farther away? If it’s frigid outside, that’s just extra motivation to move quicker and burn a few more calories.

2. One-arm lat row: Stand with feet hip-width apart, slight bend at the waist, back straight. Reach one arm forward to grab refrigerator handle. Pull it open, squeezing shoulder blade into spine. Grab carton of eggnog, close door, and repeat.

Seriously, though: Make yourself work to earn those extra calories. Even if it’s just running up and down the stairs a couple times or doing ten sit-ups, it’s better than nothing. And those extra calories will taste so much better when you’ve already burnt a few of them off your hips.

1. Post-workout stretch: Lie face down on the floor, duck head under the Christmas tree, and pray your hand reaches the electrical outlet to plug in the lights.

Seriously, though: Who says you can’t incorporate exercise into your holiday decorating? Go up and down the ladder after hanging each ornament rather than stockpiling them up top. Incorporate a squat when you dig through the decorations box to find what you’re looking for. Don’t be embarrassed. Really. No one is watching…except maybe Santa ;) .

How do you incorporate exercise into your holiday madness? What’s the biggest food temptation for you this season? Any other tips to add to my list?

Top 5 Reasons I Need to Return to My Diet

5. I need to make up for all those peppermint mochas I indulged in over the holidays (Well, okay, and the cookies and the candy and the chocolate eclair cake too.)

4. My husband is doing P90X and is majorly one-upping me in the dedication department.

3. My scale doesn’t display numbers anymore. It just says, “You need help”.

2. I’m tired of everyone looking at my daughter’s chubby cheeks and saying, “Ohhh, she looks just like you.”

1. Those jeans I didn’t think would ever see the light of day again and I just started wearing before the holidays…Yeah, they’re making me feel like a stuffed sausage again.

Do you have any diet plans for the new year? Any other resolutions to share?
