Scottish Castles and English Gardens (Meet and Greet with Laura Frantz Plus a Book Giveaway!)

Meet and Greet is a regular feature on my blog. Be forewarned…Unlike the typical interview, these brief questions will get to the true heart of my guests…or at least the heart of what’s in their kitchen. Grab a latte (or other beverage of your choice), find a comfy chair, and prepare to make a new friend.

I’m honored to have Laura Frantz as my guest today! She is such a warm, kind soul, and her writing is pretty fantastic too. :) She’s preparing to go on a trip to Scotland, so I’m glad she made time in the midst of packing to be here. Keep reading for how you can win a copy of her latest book, Love’s Reckoning!

Laura Frantz credits her grandmother as being the catalyst for her fascination with history. Frantz’s family followed Daniel Boone into Kentucky in the late 18th-century and settled in Madison County, where her family still resides. Frantz is the author of The Frontiersman’s Daughter and Courting Morrow Little, both Carol Award Finalists, and The Colonel’s Lady, a Readers  Choice/Family Fiction winner for Historical Novel of the Year and Author of the Year. She is currently working on her new historical series, The Ballantyne Legacy, and lives in the misty woods of Washington with her husband and two sons. She enjoys connecting with readers at http://www.laurafrantz.net.

Welcome, Laura! Let’s get to the questions, shall we?

Opener Question: What seven words best describe you?

Sensitive, compassionate, creative, driven, passionate, pensive, saved.

Either/Or Questions:

1) Right brained or Left brained?

Whichever side of the brain isn’t math related! :) I tend to be in creative overdrive most of the time. I can’t imagine NOT thinking about writing. Editing is more math-related, or so I’ve heard, which may be one of the reasons I like it less than the joy of writing that first draft.

2) English gardens or Hills of Scotland?

The hills of Scotland, definitely. I’m headed to the Highlands soon and want to make every minute count! It’s a joy to look forward to visiting the very castle I write about in Love’s Reckoning.

3) Homemade lasagna or Chinese take-out?

Oh, I’m such a pasta lover but Chinese is fine, too. I love to cook! Two favorite dishes at our house are lasagna and kung pao chicken. We’re quite happy eating both. And who can resist take-out? I love NOT having to cook as much as I love cooking!

4) Diary of Anne Frank or Princess Diaries?

The Diary of Anne Frank. It’s a classic that shows what really matters in life. Anne had a beautiful, hopeful spirit in a very tragic time. I hope to meet her in heaven.

5) Stick to the basics or Frills and ruffles?

Frills and ruffles, please! I’m all girl and love dressing up though I must admit I’ve never even had a manicure. And I’m a mom to two boys, not a girl in sight! Maybe I’ll get that grand-girl someday to dress up!

6) Coffee or Tea?

There’s a time and a place for both! Coffee in the mornings and tea in the evenings with a good book by the fire are wonderful, one of my favorite things about fall and winter.

7) Better Homes and Gardens or ESPN Magazine?

Better Homes and Gardens. I just want to step inside those lovely pictures, build a new house, plan a garden… I never liked sports probably because I was never any good at it. But I really admire those who enjoy them and participate!

Fun answers, Laura! I can picture you in the Scottish countryside — or in an English garden — sipping tea and writing to your heart’s content. Not sure how we could sneak any lasagna or kung pao chicken in there, but scones would be a fine replacement, don’t you think? :)

Thanks so much for being here today and letting us get to know you better!

Love’s Reckoning

On a bitter December day in 1785, Silas Ballantyne arrives at the door of master blacksmith Liege Lee in York, Pennsylvania. Just months from becoming a master blacksmith himself, Silas is determined to finish his apprenticeship and move west. But Liege soon discovers that Silas is a prodigious worker and craftsman and endeavors to keep him in York. Silas becomes interested in both of Liege’s daughters, the gentle and faith-filled Eden and the clever and high-spirited Elspeth. When he chooses one, will the other’s jealousy destroy their love?

In this sweeping family saga set in western Pennsylvania, one man’s choices in love and work, in friends and enemies, set the stage for generations to come. Love’s Reckoning is the first entry in The Ballantyne Legacy, a rich, multi-layered historical quartet from talented writer Laura Frantz, beginning in the late 1700s and following the Ballantyne family through the end of the Civil War.

Cary Grant or Carrot Cake? (Meet and Greet with Carla Olson Gade Plus a Book Giveaway!)

How’d you like the alliteration in my blog title today? :) I’m thrilled to welcome Carla Olson Gade as my guest this week! Carla is one of the first writers I met online when I started blogging a few years ago. She warmly welcomed me to the community, and I’ve loved watching her career grow. She has a great love for history, so of course I had to ask her to choose between two hunky heroes of classic film. :) (To see who she picked–and to learn how you can win a copy of her latest release–keep reading!)

A native New Englander, Carla Olson Gade grew up in an historic Massachusetts town and now lives in rural Maine with her husband and two young adult sons. Her love for writing and eras gone by turned her attention to writing historical Christian romance. Represented by MacGregor Literary Agency, she is the author of The Shadow Catcher’s Daughter (Heartsong Presents) and “Carving a Future” in the Colonial Courtships novella collection (Barbour). Carla is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Maine Fellowship of Christian Writers. She has judged several writing contests and the Inspirational Reader’s Choice Contest (RWA). Throughout the years Carla has been a conference planner and taught many ministry groups, workshops, and courses, presenting on Christian growth, genealogy, writing, and adult literacy.

Readers can find her at carlagade.com and from there connect with her on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. She also blogs at writingtodistraction.blogspot.com and colonialquills.blogspot.com.

Welcome, Carla! On to the questions we go….

Opener Question: What seven words best describe you?

Inquisitive, Creative, Intuitive, Patient, Reserved, Tenacious, Faithful

Either/Or Questions:

1) European tour or Alaskan cruise?

European for certain! I would love to tour the lands of my ancestors.  England, Wales, Scotland, and Sweden. That would be the thrill of my life.

2) Jump in with both feet or Enjoy the view?

I’m an observer, but once I get on board I jump right in!

3) Nachos and cheese or Mac and cheese?

Nachos and cheese! I tend to like spicy foods.

4) Jimmy Stewart or Cary Grant?

I’m a romantic at heart and love watching classic movies. Since Joel McCrea isn’t an option, I’ll go with Cary Grant.

5) Dress shirt or Sweatshirt?

I love to dress in a pretty blouse, but you’ll most often find me dressed casually. And living in Maine I need to dress warm. A sweatshirt for me!

6) Chocolate cake or Carrot cake?

Chocolate. Mmmmm! I might say Carrot, but often they are made with raisins and coconut frosting which I detest.

7) Indoors or Outdoors?

Although I’m a bit of a homebody and you’ll most often find me at my computer, I adore being outside, especially on a warm fall day.

—–

I agree, Carla. I’m usually indoors, but fall is a time of year I love to get outside and enjoy the perfect temperatures. As far as carrot cake, I’m with you…I love it as long as nuts, raisins, or coconut are not involved. :) And I love that you’re a classic movie fan. I have to say my favorites are the Thin Man movies. They have mystery, suspense, romance, and humor…a perfect combination.

Thanks so much for being here today! I enjoyed getting to know you better.

Top 5 Signs You’re a Word Nerd

For years, I denied the truth. But no longer.

I’m a word nerd and proud of it.

I realize this shouldn’t be a surprise since I write books and everything. But it took me a while to accept and embrace the brain God gave me.

Here are some signs that you, too, may be a word nerd…

5) You work on the daily crossword while watching Wheel of Fortune and get giddy when one of them solves the other.

4) You reprimand your child, but then stop yourself when you realize you said the word “that” too many times.

3) When asked what your favorite book is, you answer, “The thesaurus.”

2) You get excited when you find alliteration in your grocery list.

1) In your mind, it’s perfectly normal to wear war paint while playing Scrabble.

Can anyone relate to these? What other things prove you’re a word nerd like me? (Don’t be ashamed. You’re among friends. :) )
