Amish Dish is a new feature on my blog. For details and to learn how to see your ”dish” here, read this post.

It’s probably common knowledge that the Amish ride in buggies, right? But did you know they can be different depending on region and sect? (sort of like Americans with their gas-guzzling SUVs and Europeans with their Smart cars…love those cute little things…and yes, I know these are generalizations). Near where I grew up in Indiana, the buggies are fully enclosed, boxy-looking structures with sidelights, like the one pictured. Some of my family used to live in southern Michigan, and the Amish in that area own buggies that are basically open wagons with no covering. In the rain or snow, they shield themselves with an umbrella. Can anyone say “brrrr”?
How would you fight the elements if you traveled in an open wagon? What does your “ride” say about you?

Love the picture!
Hubby bought me a new SUV last year, and its the first car I ever got to pick. I love the BIGness of it.
Oh my goodness, an umbrella wouldn’t do it for me.
I drive a four door green Jeep Sahara with a soft top. I think my ride says…mid-life crisis. LOL!!!
Pretty sure my ride says I don’t care all that much about my ride.
Surely, soccer mom Honda.
Like this new dish day.

I bet they wish they could upgrade to an enclosed addition. Or, perhaps they don’t travel much. My ride? It says I don’t like to wash the car.
Tamika, I’ve heard once you get used to being higher off the road, it’s hard to go back.
Jennifer, LOL, My son would adore your ride…He’s really into Diego and safari and jungle stuff.
Wendy, One good thing about not caring about your ride…You don’t have a heart attack whenever something (or someone) scrapes the door.
T. Anne, Your car sounds about like mine. It’s gotten more baths in the last week than it did in an entire year b/c we’re selling it.
My ride screams “I’m a mama”…yep it’s a swagger wagon;)
Melanie, Swagger wagon…Love it!
I drive a Ford Sport Trac. I used to call it my chick truck, but since I’ve seen a number of men driving them, I stopped. I like my shiny silver set of wheels. It’s not only kinda cute, but I feel safer in it than I did the small car I used to drive.
Keli! You drive a truck?! Who knew? I love it! And I’m still recovering from the celebration and all the cupcakes yesterday. Can’t imagine how you must feel!
I grew up near Lancaster PA and now I’m trying to remember what they used, I think the closed in boxy ones cause we took a ride once.
My current ride says I am a consciencious person Oh did I destroy that word! LOL I drive a Honda and love it with the sunroof and sportier look but also great on mileage and repairs.
Terri, I found pictures of some PA buggies, and I think you’re right. They looked pretty boxy, but they were a little curved on the edges.
Sounds like you have a fun car! My husband is a sunroof junkie…Ever since his first car had one, he won’t drive one without. Does your car also have a stereo with volume that doesn’t go below “loud”? Seems like those two go hand in hand. Well, for my husband at least.
My ride says, “Watch out. Busy soccer mom coming through.” And it says I must have other priorities in life.
LOL, Heather, I can just see you, pedal to the metal charging through traffic. And I think it’s A-ok to have other priorities.
Ha! I’m with T. Anne and Heather and all the other drivers of none-too-clean minivans.
LOL, Rosslyn, Apparently writers neglect cleaning their vehicles for the sake of their word count.
I didn’t know the buggies were different according to region, Sarah. Thanks for the info.!
The Amish in our area of Illinois use the closed buggies. We’ve taken a couple of rides in one, and it’s so much fun. They use a lap blanket to keep warm.
I drive a Pontiac G6 GT, which says I’m thankful the Lord has enabled us to increase from our earlier rides of really old, in-th-shop-a-lot cars. This is the first car we’ve owned in 36 years that is still under warranty. NEW is next!
Jen, Really old, in-the-shop-a-lot cars are the pits. So glad you’ve avoided the pits lately!
